Skincare is not much of a priority these days and many of us have dropped our routines. If you feel overwhelmed with many products or just don’t know how to restart your skincare routine, then we are here to save your day. We have 6 tips on how to ease into a new routine, without aggravating your skin with excessive amounts of products.
Start with one ingredient every 7 days
Give a 7-day rest to your skin and then slowly start introducing products to your skin. As per dermatologist Dr Kiran Sethi, Isya Aesthetics, “I recommend taking a 7-day skin-fast and then starting skincare one by one. So, first use vitamin-c for 7 days, the next active maybe it’s niacinamide for 7 days and keep adding accordingly.”
She further elaborated on what to use and said, “Use vitamin c, alpha hydroxy acids for glow, beta hydroxy acids for acne, retinol for antiaging and niacinamide for anti-oil and glow.”
Consult an expert
It is very important to consult an expert who understands your skin and its need on a case to case basis. What works for one individual may not work for another one and that is exactly what Dr Jamuna Pai, SkinLab suggests, “All of us may have a short detox period where we take a break from our skin care routine. Now this may lead to a change in our skin type based on the changing weather and temperature. The safest thing to do is to resume with the usage of products that you have tried and tested before. You may also consult an expert for the same, according to your skin type and what would best suit your skin at that time.”
Build up tolerance for actives
It is important to build your skincare routine and not apply all the products at once. Dr Pai, suggests: “Start with gentle exfoliation to get rid of dead skin cells that may have been formed during the detox period. Use a moisturiser twice a day. Use one that best suits your skin type. Sunscreen must be applied twice, once in the morning and repeat application at noon. Use a gentle face wash twice a day. You may also additionally use homemade masks or sheet masks to lock in moisture to keep the skin supple. Once your skin has got used to the regimen you have restarted, you could then use products with active ingredients. Use a vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid etc. like serums/creams under your moisturiser at bedtime, to address any specific concerns.”
Keep it in mind to use products that are for that season. In the summer use lighter products and solutions whereas in the winter use hydrating and deeply nourishing oils.
Right after cleansing the skin it is very important to exfoliate the skin as well. This will help in getting rid of dead skin and will reveal a fresh layer of skin from underneath.
Sunscreen is a must
I know we have said it many times before but when it comes to sunscreen we don’t mind repeating ourselves and telling you again that applying sunscreen is in the holy grail of beauty. Every dermatologist recommends it, and it is something that should be a part of our skincare routine no matter what. Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, Isaac Luxe talks about the importance of sunscreen when we restart our skincare routine, “Sunscreen is, hands down, the most crucial skin-care product. You must apply a broad spectrum of at least 30 SPF to protect your skin from sun damage after applying serum & moisturizer respectively. During day time our prime concern is to protect our skin from UV rays, free radicals & etc.”
